Alfonsina “Fonzy” Martini, 84, of Coventry, passed away Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at Briarcliffe Manor in Johnston. Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Alfonso and Angelina (Sbardella) Martini. She lived most of her life in Providence and Cranston, before moving to Coventry in 1987.
She had worked as an inspector for General Electric Company for 17 years, retiring in 1980. She was a former communicant of Holy Ghost Church and Holy Cross Church, both in Providence. For many years, she assisted Sister M. Bernadette of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary in her ministry at the Adult Correctional Institution. She was also active in her ministry to the residents of the “I” building at the State Medical Center, later named the Sister Bernadette Building.
Fonzy was a loving sister and a devoted friend. She leaves a sister, Louise Giarrusso of North Providence and a sister, Veronica Ricci of Cranston. She was the sister of the late Elvira DelGreco, Mary Fusco, Ida Hillman, Mafalda Ciolfi, Lenora Martini, Olga Martini, Benny Martini and Rudolph Martini. She was the devoted friend of Eileen McKenna with whom she resided.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial Saturday at 9 a.m. in Holy Cross Church, Hartford Ave., Providence Entombment will follow in Our Risen Christ Mausoleum, St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
