Alfred Russo, 88, of Providence, passed away Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center. He was the beloved husband of Teresa (Ombrellaro) Russo. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Carmine and Patrizia (Dolce) Russo.
Mr. Russo worked for the City of Providence School Department, initially as a Truant Officer, then Teacher and Guidance Counselor and was Head Counselor at Perry Middle School. He was the Director of Community Schools under the Title One Program and the Rhode Island College Teacher Corps. A decorated WWII Army Veteran, he was a recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star and had served as Adjutant General and Department Commander of the Italian American War Veterans. A communicant of St. Pius V Church, Mr. Russo was a Lector, Eucharistic Minister and visited the homebound.
Besides his wife of 62 years, he is survived by his cherished daughter, Elaine Martin and her husband, John; his treasured grandson, Andrei Martin; a brother, James Russo and a sister, Alessandra Foley. He was the brother of the late Albert Russo, Anthony Russo, Lucretia DeSantis and Eva DiPrete.
His funeral will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m. from the Maceroni Funeral Home 1381 Smith St., North Providence, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in St. Pius V Church, Eaton St., Providence. Visitation Sunday 4-7 p.m. Burial with Military Honors will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
