August V.“ AUGIE” Bergero, 89, of Providence, passed away on Thursday, July 26, 2007 at Elmhurst Extended Care. He was the son of the late Augusto and Margherita (Berta) Bergero and the brother of the late Victor Bergero.
A professional musician, he studied at the New England Conservatory of Music, played in Army Bands, the Art Tancredi Orchestra, the Phil Napoleon New Orleans Dixieland Band with vocalist Gloria DeHaven and had his own Dixieland Band. He also toured with musician/ comedian Jackie Vernon and was on WJAR Radio with the Earl Sheahan Band. He belonged to the Providence Federation of Musicians, Local 198-457 and played sax, clarinet and flute. He was a former Federal employee who worked in Boston and Davisville. The Davisville men still lunch together once a month. He was an Army Veteran of WWII.
Augie is survived by his niece, Marguerite (Bergero) Spetrini of Bowie, MD, her husband Joseph, daughter Andrea and son Joey. He loved to tell his fish jokes to his friends, Dottie Dyer, Teri Lane, Betty Esser, Mary Bartholomew and Karen Curran.
His funeral will be held Saturday at 9:30 am from the MACERONI Funeral Home, 1381 Smith St., North Providence, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30am in Blessed Sacrament Church, Academy Ave., Providence. Visiting hours respectfully omitted. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
