Donald F. Hamel, 72, of Smithfield, passed away Monday, January 21, 2008 at home. He was the beloved husband of Claire (Fontaine) Hamel. Born in Smithfield, he was the son of the late William and Yvonne (Turcotte) Hamel.
Donald was a Master Sergeant and Training NCO with the RI Air National Guard, 102nd Air Control Squadron for 37 dedicated years until his retirement. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a lector and long time communicant of St. Michael Church.
He leaves a son, Paul Hamel; three daughters, Cathleen Veroneau, Gisele Rodrigues and Laura Cullen; a sister, Rita D’Arezzo; three brothers, Leo Hamel, Norman Hamel and Gerard “Gus” Hamel; nine grandchildren and a great grandson. He was the brother of the late William R. Hamel.
His funeral will be held Saturday at 9am, from the MACERONI Funeral Home, 1381 Smith St., North Providence, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am in St. Michael Church, Farnum Pike, Smithfield. VISITATION Friday 5-8pm. Burial with Military Honors will be in Highland Memorial Park, Johnston. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to St. Michael Church, 80 Farnum Pike, Esmond, RI 02917.
