EDWARD AVELLA, 71, of North Providence, passed away Monday, March 12, 2007 at Philip Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence. He was the husband of Jeanne (Pisaturo) Avella. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Felix and Florence (Marrocco) Avella.

Edward had worked as a Special Delivery Messenger for the U.S. Postal Service at the Turnkey Post Office in Providence until he retired due to illness in 1974. He was a disabled Army veteran of the Korean War and was awarded the Purple Heart, 2 Bronze Stars, the Korean Service Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge. He was a member of VFW Post 10011 of North Providence, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was also an avid golfer and a handyman and always liked to help everyone.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Stephen E. Avella; a daughter, Susan J. Lemek and her husband David; a brother, Felix Avella and a granddaughter, Amanda Lemek. He was the brother of the late Alfred Avella, Florence Burch and Adele Riley.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial Thursday at 10am in Mary, Mother of Mankind Church, Fourth St., North Providence. Burial with Military Honors will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. Visiting hours respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to Home and Hospice Care of RI, 169 George St., Pawtucket, RI 02860.
