Gregory Anthony Mercurio, Sr.

March 4, 1928 — May 20, 2011

Gregory A. Mercurio, Sr., 83, of Providence, passed away after a brief illness Friday, May 20, 2011 at Roger Williams Medical Center. As he began his journey from his temporary life on earth to his eternal life, he was surrounded by his loving family and friends. They were joined by the team of kind, caring, compassionate physicians, surgeons ,nurses, allied health personnel, administration and Pastoral Care from Roger Williams Medical Center and 21st Century Oncology, who allowed his earthly life to come to an end with dignity, without suffering or pain and with great comfort and peace to his family.
He was the beloved husband of Elizabeth V. “Betty” (Tocco) Mercurio. Born in Medford, MA, he was the son of the late Gregory and Jennie (Yandoli) Mercurio.

Greg was a salesman for Dorsey Dairy Equipment Company for many years, an Executive with Stop and Shop markets in Dedham Massachusetts, then worked for the Rhode Island Department of Transportation for 15 years before retiring in 1991. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War.

Besides his devoted wife of 58 years, he is survived by his loving son, Gregory A. Mercurio, Jr.; a nephew, Paul McNamee and his wife Pauline, their children and grandchildren, as well as Ms. Diane DeNoncour and her son Matthew DeNoncour. He is the beloved uncle of David and Deborah Bastien and their children, Adam and Taylor and is also survived by his loving Godchildren, Judy Szafarz, Joseph Martinous and Christine Arrasate. He was preceded in death by his brothers Benjamin and Joseph Mercurio and sister Theresa McNamee.

In his retirement, Greg loved to care for his lawn and flower garden and as his family and friends will attest, was an excellent Chef of Italian cuisine and mastered the art of grilling on his favorite charcoal barbecue.

Visitation Monday morning from 9:15 a.m. to10:15 a.m. at the Maceroni Funeral Home, 1381 Smith St., North Providence with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Augustine Church, 639 Mt. Pleasant Avenue, Providence. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.

At Greg’s request, so that others less fortunate than he could have access to the same compassion and quality of radiation oncology care that he was so privileged to receive at Roger Williams Cancer Center and In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory and name may be made
