Joseph P. Hopkins of North Providence, a devoted husband, uncle, and dedicated educator passed away on Saturday, December 28, 2024. He was the beloved husband of Maureen (DelVecchio) Hopkins for 48 years. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Patrick and Margaret (McGauley) Hopkins.
Mr. Hopkins graduated from LaSalle Academy, Providence College and earned his master’s degree at Rhode Island College. After beginning his career as a teacher in the Johnston School Department, he spent many years inspiring young minds with his commitment to learning and his caring nature. Mr. Hopkins eventually transitioned to a leadership role, serving as the principal of Winsor Hill School in Johnston for 16 years, where he was admired by students, staff, and parents alike. Upon retiring, he taught drivers' education to the youth in Smithfield and Woonsocket High Schools for several years, and owned a jewelry store in the Providence Arcade.
To family and friends, he was always known as “Uncle Joe," a father figure to his nieces, nephews and their children. He was always there for his family, attending every holiday, celebration, and achievement in their lives. Even though he was a selective eater, he always enjoyed a Sunday family dinner with meatballs and pasta “without butter” with his family and best pal Cali.
In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by his cherished nieces and nephews, Gregory and Suzanne Mancini, Stephen and Donna Mancini, Melissa and Joseph D’Amico, Susan Arsenault and Laurie Loiselle; many great nieces and nephews, godson Nicholas Veasey, and his cousins, Ben and Anne Kilcline, John Kilcline and Lena Hopkins. He was the brother of the late Henry Hopkins and Margaret Mancini.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, January 2, 2025 at 10 a.m. in St. Anthony Church, 1413 Mineral Spring Ave., North Providence.
