Louis Santiano, 84, of Providence, passed away Sunday, August 10, 2008 at Rhode Island Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Elaine V. (D’Ambra) Santiano. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Celestino and Concetta (Silvestri) Santiano.
Louis was a 1949 graduate of Notre Dame University and proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Corps during WWII. His career, which was devoted to public service, included many years with the USO, teacher/coach and first Athletic Director of Bishop Hendricken High School, co-founder of the House of Hope – a substance abuse rehabilitation center, and Director of Recreation for the City of Providence, where he retired from in 1987.
Besides his wife of 57 years, he leaves two sons, Mark Santiano and Michael Santiano; two daughters, Teresa Sangermano and Anne F. Gemme; a brother, Anthony M. Santiano; three grandchildren, Mark, Jessica and Sarah and two great grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Michael Santiano and Mary DeCubellis.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial Thursday at 10am in St. Thomas Church, 65 Fruit Hill Ave., Providence. Visitation Wednesday 5-8pm.in the Maceroni Funeral Home, 1381 Smith St., North Providence. Private burial with Military Honors will be in RI Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.
