Norman A. Martineau “Pee Wee”, 75, a lifelong resident of Smithfield, passed away Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital. He was the loving husband of Cecile “CE” R. (Fontaine) Martineau. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Albert J. and Emma E. (Bessette) Martineau.
Norman had been a machine operator for Mine Safety Appliance for over 30 years. He volunteered at the Rehabilitation Hospital of RI, leading a group of pulmonary patients through their exercises. A member of the Holy Name Society of St. Michael Church, he served for many years at the Church as the head usher. He was a former member of the RI National Guard and enjoyed bowling, roller skating, golf , ball-room dancing and was an avid card and cribbage player. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Besides his wife of 54 years, he leaves three children, Norman J. Martineau, Kenneth A. Martineau and Amy J. Kaighin; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Kenneth E. Bessette.
His funeral will be held Saturday at 9 a.m., from the Maceroni Funeral Home, 1381 Smith St., North Providence, with Commendation and Liturgy of the Word at 10 a.m. in St. Michael Church, 80 Farnum Pike, Smithfield. Visitation Friday 4-7 p.m. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
