Richard Van Nieuwenhuize, PhD

Richard Ernest Van Nieuwenhuize, fondly known as “Mr. Van,” passed away on Friday, December 6, 2024, at Brigham & Women’s Hospital. He was 79 years old. 

A devoted husband to Carol A. (DeLuca) Van Nieuwenhuize, Richard shared 53 wonderful years of marriage with her. Born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island, Richard was the son of the late Albert and Marie-Jose (Schiettecatte) Van Nieuwenhuize. He was passionate about education, earning a B.S. in Biology, an M.A.T. in Education, and a C.A.G.S. in Administration from Rhode Island College. In 1979, he earned his PhD.

Richard dedicated 31 years to teaching and serving as an administrator at North Providence High School, touching countless lives before retiring in 1996. He was a longtime member of the Rhode Island Drivers Education Teachers Association and began teaching in the early 1970s. His impact as an educator went far beyond the classroom, and he was beloved by all who knew him.

Outside of his professional life, Richard had a lifelong love for his family and his Corvette. His greatest joy came from spending time with his beloved wife, children, and grandchildren, who were the center of his world. He was known for his generosity and rare, selfless kindness that made him truly one of a kind. Richard's warmth and compassion were felt by everyone he met.

In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by his children: Anne-Marie Van Nieuwenhuize and her husband Carl Africo; Michelle Van Nieuwenhuize, MD, and her husband Richard Brederson, Esq.; and Richard E. Van Nieuwenhuize Jr., MD, and his wife Angela Fernandes, RN. He was the proud grandfather of Ariana, Nicolas, and Richard Africo; Pierce Brederson; and Richard, Alexander, Christopher, and Julianna Van Nieuwenhuize. Richard was predeceased by his brother, the late Albert Van Nieuwenhuize, MD. He will be deeply missed by his many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
