RINALDO G. ALMONTE, 100, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 11, 2006 at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the loving husband of the late Carmella Almonte. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Domenic and Rosa (DiSantis) Almonte. He lived in Johnston most of his life
He was an honors graduate of Classical High School, and was accepted to Tufts Medical School in Boston, however, like many of his generation, he was not afforded the opportunity to pursue higher education. He highly valued education, and continually encouraged younger generations to pursue their greatest potential in school. Rinaldo and his family owned and operated the landmark Almonte’s dry goods store on Federal Hill. The store was a leading retailer in Providence for many years, serving countless Rhode Islanders during its 85-year operation. Rinaldo continued operating the store even after the suburban malls changed the retail climate of the city because of what the store meant to the community. He had many loyal customers that continued to visit him, and his store became the “unofficial” Federal Hill Historical Society, and he was its curator.
Rinaldo continued to run Almonte’s, working six full days a week, until his passing. This past September, he celebrated his 100th birthday at the store with many of his closest friends during his customary mid-day lunch break.
Rinaldo also served his country during WWII in the Army Air Corps. He was the brother of the late Irving Almonte, Eva Palmieri and Bilva Baglini.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday at 10am in Holy Cross Church, Hartford Ave., Providence. Burial will follow in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. Visiting hours respectfully omitted. In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to the St. Cabrini Fund, a foundation fund that Rinaldo established to support academic excellence, c/o The Rhode Island Foundation, One Union Station, Providence, RI 02903.
