Salvatore Di Iorio, 97, of Bay Spring Avenue, Barrington, formerly of Longwood Avenue, Providence, died Friday, June 22, 2007. He was the beloved husband of the late Margaret (Salzillo) Di Iorio.
Mr. Di Iorio was born and educated in Providence and graduated from Brown University in 1931 with a degree in electrical engineering. While attending Brown, he received many academic honors and was appointed a Francis Wayland Scholar For Excellence In College Studies. Also at Brown, he participated and earned letters in athletics as a member of the cross country and track teams and was elected captain of the cross country team in his senior year.
For most of his professional life, Mr. Di Iorio was employed by IBM in Providence as a customer engineer and technical specialist. He was an expert on the operation and repair of the most advanced computer systems that IBM produced during the 1950’s & 1960’s. He retired from IBM in 1975 after 32 years of service.
He was the son of the late Donato Di Iorio and Frieda (Meyer) Di Iorio, who both immigrated to Providence in 1907 from Italy and Switzerland respectively. He is survived by his son Edmund S. Di Iorio; grandsons Christopher and Timothy Di Iorio; one great grandson, and two sisters, Bertha Wilkinson and Dora Di Iorio both of East Greenwich. He was the brother of the late Anthony Di Iorio of Cranston, Teresa Falk of Scituate, and Anna Heaton of Scituate.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial Tuesday at 10am in St. Augustine Church, 639 Mt. Pleasant Avenue, Providence. VISITATION Monday 2-4pm at the MACERONI Funeral Home, 1381 Smith St., North Providence. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
